How to Digitize Old Family Recipes

Some of the most meaningful recipes live on handwritten index cards, old notebooks, and stained pieces of paper tucked into cookbooks.

Digitizing those recipes protects them and makes them easier to cook from. Instead of fading ink and fragile paper, the recipe becomes searchable, editable, and safe for the future.

The simplest approach is to photograph the recipe card in good lighting. Try to keep the page flat and fill the frame so the text is easy to read.

Using OCR scanning tools, that photo can be converted into editable text. Once converted, the recipe can be organized into ingredients and instructions and saved in a digital recipe library.

This process preserves both the recipe and the memories behind it, while making it easier to cook the dish again for the next generation.
