BIOGRAPHY

Formed in 1965 in London, Pink Floyd is an English rock band that became one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in the history of popular music. Originally led by singer and guitarist Syd Barrett, who shaped their early psychedelic sound on their 1967 debut 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn', the band underwent a major shift when Barrett's deteriorating mental health led to his departure. With David Gilmour joining on guitar and vocals alongside Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, the group evolved into pioneers of progressive rock, distinguished by their extended compositions, sonic experiments, and elaborate live performances. Throughout the 1970s, under the thematic and lyrical leadership of Roger Waters, Pink Floyd achieved massive global success with landmark concept albums. 'The Dark Side of the Moon', 'Wish You Were Here', 'Animals', and 'The Wall' explored themes of madness, alienation, and existential dread, becoming defining works of the era. Internal tensions eventually led to Wright and Waters leaving the band in the 1980s. Gilmour and Mason, later rejoined by Wright, carried the Pink Floyd name forward into the 1990s, recording massive albums like 'The Division Bell' (1994) and concluding their studio career with the instrumental tribute 'The Endless River' (2014) following Wright's passing. Though the band is no longer actively recording or touring together, their legacy remains incredibly active as of 2025 and 2026. Following the historic $400 million sale of their recorded music catalog to Sony Music in late 2024, Pink Floyd has continued to dominate music news. Late 2025 and early 2026 saw the massive 50th Anniversary release of 'Wish You Were Here', which returned the band to the top of global charts, alongside archival Record Store Day releases like the 1975 'Live From The Los Angeles Sports Arena'. Looking forward, Sony Music announced an official compilation project titled '8-Tracks' for June 2026, offering newly curated classics from their 1971–1979 creative peak and ensuring their timeless soundscapes continue to reach both lifelong devotees and new generations.
